a) Kasubi Tombs: These are one of the world’s heritage tourist sites recognized by UNESCO. This cultural site shows the advanced technology that the past Baganda had attained by 1880s. Built and decorated with local materials, these royal tombs house 4 former Buganda Kings/Kabaka’s. This amazing cultural place is located 5 Kilometers away from the busting city centre on Kasubi Hill off Hoima Road. The name of the cultural site’s main house where the 4 kings were buried is Muzibu-azala Mpanga. Though these tombs were gutted by fire in March, 2010, their reconstruction is still going on.
b) Namugongo Martyrs' Shrine: This is a religious site which is located 12 Kilometers way from the Kampala City centre. This religious attraction is found along Jinja Road. This became a tourist attraction after 20 Ugandan Christians were burnt alive in 1886 on the 3rd of June. This was because these Christians had disobeyed the orders of ruling King of Buganda Kabaka Mwanga II who ordered them to be killed. The shrine now is a religious place and people go there for prayers. However on every 3rd of June of each year, there is a pilgrim held at the shrine to remember the Uganda Martyrs.
c) Uganda Museum: This is where they display all the Uganda’s cultural and historical beliefs in terms of exhibitions. The museum displays all Uganda’s local cultures in their natural environment. In these exhibitions, demonstration of the local housings, way of living, behaviors and so on are clearly shown in different local tribal housings. More still there is also ethnological and a natural-historical exhibition which all portrays the country’s past.
d) The Uganda National Theatre: The theatre is specifically used for cultural performances from the different cultural groups in Uganda. It was opened in 1959 and is surrounded by small shops where different local artists display their Art and craft paintings which are locally made. ( made from local materials)
e) Parliament Building: This is a most important building in Uganda where all the Uganda Members of Parliament seat every day to discuss issues of the country. The building also symbolizes the country's independence.
f) Uganda Monument: This symbolizes the country’s independence.
g) Religious places: these include: the Rubaga Cathedral and the Namirembe Cathedral which were built at the beginning of the century. The Rubaga cathedral is found on the Rubaga Hill and is for Catholic Christians. Namirembe Cathedral is the largest in East Africa and is for the Protestant Christians.
h) Other religious places include the Bahai Temple which is one of the Bahai Temples in the world. It’s the only one of its Kind in the whole of Africa. The temple is only used for meditation. The Hindu Temple which is found in the city center, the Kibuli Mosque which is found on the Kibuli Hill, Old Kampala Mosque which is commonly known as the Gadafi Mosque since it was sponsored and opened by the Libya President Col. Mwama Gadafi.
i) Makerere University: This is the oldest University in East Africa.
j) Local Markets like the Nakasero and Owino Markets. These two are commonly good in selling fresh food like fruits and vegetables.
k) Nagalabi coronation ground: This cultural site is located on Buddo Hill in Wakiso district and has characteristics such as the coronation Ground where all the Kings of Buganda are crowned from. This is an amazing site with the Main Buganda house and where all the rituals of Buganda royal family are carried out after one is crowned a King.
l) Lubiri/Twekobe House. This is the Buganda King’s Palace where he has his own house called the Twekobe House.
m) Kabaka’s Lake. This is one of the inland water bodies we have in Uganda with no outlets and inlets. It is a small lake found near the city. It is referred to as the Kabaka’s lake simply because it is near the Kings Palace and most of the king’s servants used to fetch water from that lake.
